When Christine reflects on the final chapter of her husband Chris’s life, she remembers the quiet moments of connection that helped carry them through an unimaginably difficult time. Their journey brought them through St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, the Health Sciences Centre, and, during Chris’s final weeks, the Palliative Care Unit at the Dr. L. A. Miller Centre. What stayed with her most was the compassion of the health care teams and the importance of having a comforting place for family to gather.

Chris passed away on July 16, 2024, at just 47 years old. As what would have been his 48th birthday approached, Christine found herself returning to the space where she and her family spent so many hours together. Room 10 had become more than a room; it had been a place where comfort mattered, where loved ones came together, and where care extended beyond medicine.

Christine hoped other families could experience the same sense of comfort and care that meant so much to her own.

“It was where we spent many hours with loved ones,” she said. “I wanted others to feel that same sense of care and support.”

Turning Grief Into Purpose

Determined to honour Chris and to help future families, Christine reached out to the Health Care Foundation to explore how she might make a meaningful contribution. Together, a clear goal took shape: enhancing the family rooms at the Dr. L. A. Miller Centre Palliative Care Unit so they remain welcoming spaces for connection, reflection, and comfort.

What began as a personal hope quickly grew into something much larger.

Friends, local businesses, volunteers, and community members rallied around Christine, inspired by her strength and her desire to give back. Through a music-filled fundraising event that featured local performers, a silent auction, a 50/50 draw, and countless acts of support behind the scenes, the community helped transform her vision into reality.

“I could not have done any of this myself,” Christine said. “I was blessed with friends who donated their time and talents. The support was incredible.”

A Gift With Lasting Impact

Through the collective generosity of attendees, local partners, and generous support from Equinor and the Jennifer A. Cutler Foundation, Christine raised $19,556.95 in support of enhancements to the Palliative Care family rooms at the Dr. L. A. Miller Centre.

“From the bottom of my heart, a big thank you to everyone,” she shared.

Story Update: A Vision Realized

Christine’s vision has now become reality.

New furniture has been delivered and installed in the family spaces, creating warm, welcoming environments where loved ones can gather, share memories, rest, and support one another during some of life’s most difficult moments. These enhancements help ensure that families have a comfortable place to be together, recognizing that compassionate care extends beyond the patient to those who walk alongside them. Christine’s efforts were matched by the generosity of other palliative care donors to fully realize the completion of these essential spaces.

Sincere appreciation to everyone who helped Christine and her family on this journey to honour her husband’s memory through generosity.
