My personal journey with donations to a variety of public charities began in adulthood as a way to contribute to society in general.  Through the adventures of a close family member in the Newfoundland & Labrador health care system, I became familiar with the many challenges which healthcare providers, employees, patients, and families encounter within the healthcare system.  Due to this, I have focused a majority of my giving, through time and donations, to healthcare – specifically the Health Care Foundation.

Public donations to fund quality healthcare in Newfoundland & Labrador are essential.  Our province constantly struggles with the challenge of providing the highest possible level of care to the users of our healthcare system. The many problems are well known.  Less well known are the positive impacts donations through charitable organisations such as the Health Care Foundation make to improve our healthcare system.  Examples of the type of contributions made by the Health Care Foundation and similar organisations can be found at https://healthcarefoundation.ca/who-we-are/what-we-do/

Direct donation became a priority for me to help improve specific healthcare services, which in turn provided me with an immediate sense of satisfaction. Over time, the need for a long-term view became more obvious. Direct donation for specific projects was a need that would not go away. How do organisations like the Health Care Foundation deal with ongoing needs despite varying levels of public funding for maintaining the provincial health care system, let alone improving it?

This led me to “planned giving,” which is a way to arrange for future donations to be provided to charitable organisations.  I made a provision in my will to ensure that the HCF (and other public charities) received funding when I finished my personal journey.   For me, this was one way to continue contributing to the public good in the future while providing benefits such as:

  1. Clarifying for my eventual beneficiaries and estate executors the importance I place on contributing to charitable organisations such as the HCF
  2. Potentially helping to minimise the bite that taxes would inevitably consume when I pass.
  3. Ensuring a legacy of contributing to the needs of our society through contributing to meeting always growing healthcare needs

From a charitable organisation viewpoint such as the HCF, “Planned Giving” of donations provides it with benefits such as funding flexibility, which is not necessarily tied to specific projects but can be directed to the areas of greatest need and the ability to provide funding in the year(s) when, for a host of reasons, annual giving is diminished. “Planned Giving” meets the needs of both the contributing individual and the healthcare charity which serves the public healthcare needs of the province.
