The Health Care Foundation, in collaboration with Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services, today announced a transformational advancement in surgical care with the integration of robotic-assisted surgery into the province’s health care system.

The Foundation has long played a pivotal role in advancing medical innovation in Newfoundland and Labrador, with philanthropy remaining a catalyst for progress. This $8 million campaign marks a significant step forward in elevating patient care and will be made possible through the steadfast support of donors.

This initiative extends beyond acquiring the technology itself; it also invests in specialized training to ensure surgical teams can maximize the system’s capabilities. As the province’s tertiary care and teaching hospital, the Health Sciences Centre will house the robotic-assisted surgery system; supporting immediate clinical use while also creating long-term training opportunities.

With two operating consoles, students from Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine will gain hands-on experience in robotic-assisted procedures, equipping the next generation of surgeons with advanced surgical skills. By introducing this system, Newfoundland and Labrador will strengthen its ability to recruit and retain top medical talent, ensuring long-term benefits for patient care and the province’s health care system.

The Health Care Foundation remains committed to advancing health care through donor-driven innovation. Philanthropic support is critical to realizing the full potential of this initiative— enhancing patient care, expanding surgical training, and positioning Newfoundland and Labrador as a leader in surgical excellence.
