May 5, 2025St. Johns, N.L. – Through its annual Comfort in Care™ program, the Health Care Foundation has awarded $100,000 in grants to 100 frontline health-care teams to support patients, residents, and families in Newfoundland and Labrador. Now marking its 20th year, Comfort in Care™ empowers those delivering care to identify and address the unique comfort needs of the individuals they serve through thoughtful, real-world solutions that improve quality of care beyond clinical treatment.

“This program allows care teams to identify the needs they see every day and deliver enhancements that make a real and lasting difference,” said Paul Snow, President and Chief Executive Officer, Health Care Foundation. “Whether it’s sensory tools, comfort items, or specialized equipment, these grants reflect what’s possible when donors choose to invest in meaningful, patient-centered care.”

Since its inception in 2005, Comfort in Care™ has provided more than $1.1 million in funding to patient-focused initiatives within hospitals and long-term care centres throughout the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services’ Eastern-Urban zone.

“Comfort in Care™ is a powerful example of the impact made possible through the support of the Health Care Foundation,” said Ron Johnson, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, NL Health Services – Eastern-Urban Zone. “What sets this program apart is that it is driven by the people who know patients best: the health-care professionals delivering care each day. Their insight, compassion, and clinical expertise ensure that every grant enhances care in ways that are practical, personal, and deeply patient-centered.”

This year’s grant recipients span acute care, long-term care, rehabilitation, palliative care, and community-based services such as paramedicine. Funded projects include items that support physical comfort, emotional well-being, independence, and a stronger sense of connection for patients, residents, and their families.

The program is made possible through the generosity of donors and the longstanding sponsorship of belairdirect, a steadfast partner of both the Comfort in Care™ program and the Health Care Foundation for many years.

The Health Care Foundation also acknowledges the leadership of the Comfort in Care™ Selection Committee. Their careful evaluation of each application ensures donor contributions are invested with purpose and impact, supporting projects that reflect the very best of patient-centered care.
