The Mental Health and Addictions Centre in St. John’s represents a new era of mental health and addictions care in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Opened in 2025 on the Health Sciences Centre campus, the modern 102-bed facility replaced the Waterford Hospital and was designed around a fundamentally different vision of care, one that puts people, dignity, recovery and well-being at its centre.
Individual inpatient rooms provide greater privacy and dignity. Welcoming shared spaces encourage connection. Dedicated areas for recreation, art therapy and horticulture, outdoor terraces and enhanced counselling and therapy spaces create an environment designed to support healing and recovery.
Through the Health Care Foundation, donors can help build on this extraordinary new chapter in mental health and addictions care.
- Your gift gives people an environment where recovery, dignity and hope can grow.
The environment in which someone receives mental health and addictions care matters.
Privacy. Natural light. A quiet place to reflect. A welcoming space to connect with family. Opportunities to participate in meaningful activities.
Each can play a role in helping people feel respected, supported and empowered throughout their care.
Donor support can help enhance patient and family spaces, provide comfort items and introduce thoughtful additions that make the Centre feel less institutional and more supportive.
Recovery does not happen in isolation.
Connection with family, health care professionals, peers and community can be an important part of a person’s journey toward wellness.
Donors can help create and enhance spaces and programs that encourage those connections, places where patients can gather, participate in therapeutic activities, spend time with family or simply experience moments of normalcy during their stay.
Mental health and addictions care continues to evolve.
Through philanthropy, we can help health-care professionals explore new approaches to care, introduce innovative programs and provide resources that complement clinical treatment and support the whole person.
From therapeutic and recreational programs to technology, education, equipment and enhancements to the patient environment, donor support can help turn new ideas into meaningful opportunities for patients.
Healing can happen in many ways.
It can happen through a conversation. Through art. Through movement and recreation. By spending time outdoors. By learning a new skill. Or by rediscovering a sense of purpose and possibility.
The Mental Health and Addictions Centre was designed with spaces that recognize the importance of these experiences.
Donors can help bring those spaces to life by supporting programs, equipment and enhancements that encourage participation, independence, creativity and well-being.
For generations, the Waterford Hospital was synonymous with psychiatric care in Newfoundland and Labrador. The opening of the Mental Health and Addictions Centre marked the beginning of something new; a modern environment built around recovery-oriented, person-centred care.
But a new building is only the beginning.
Through the Health Care Foundation, philanthropy can continue to enhance the experiences of patients, families and the health care professionals who care for them.
Your generosity can help create welcoming spaces, support innovative programs, provide specialized equipment and resources, enhance comfort, encourage connection, and help make the journey toward recovery a little brighter.
Every gift helps strengthen health care for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador
