A Gift of Gratitude and Comfort

When Peg Kavanagh was admitted to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in serious condition, her family found comfort in the compassionate care that surrounded her.

“From the time she was seen in the Emergency Department to her admission to the seventh floor, she received very compassionate care, from the emergency physician to the nursing staff,” recalls her daughter, Mary Kavanagh.

During an incredibly difficult time, the care Peg received meant a great deal to her family. They were also deeply grateful to Father Philip Melvin for his visits, support, and prayers throughout Peg’s hospital stay.

For the Kavanagh family, St. Clare’s also held a special connection to Peg’s own life of caring for others. A Public Health Nurse during the 1940s and 1950s, Peg dedicated much of her life to caring for people in her community.

Following her passing, her family chose to honour that legacy by inviting memorial donations to St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. Through the generosity of family and friends, those gifts became a meaningful way to say thank you while helping provide comfort and compassionate care for other patients and families.

“We were so grateful to St. Clare’s for helping us through a very difficult time and giving us such comfort,” says Mary. “We felt the need to give back, especially in the area of comfort care.”

Through their generosity, Peg’s family and friends are helping ensure that the same sense of comfort and compassion they experienced will be there for others when they need it most.

Making a Difference in Our Mother’s Name

For the Kavanagh family, remembering their mother, Peg, meant finding a way to give back and bring comfort to other families during difficult days.

“In memory of our mother, we felt the need to give back, especially in the area of comfort care,” shares the Kavanagh family.

Having experienced firsthand what it means to spend long hours at the hospital with a loved one, the family understood how much simple comforts can matter.

“For family members spending long hours at the hospital, and sometimes staying overnight with a loved one, having a comfortable place to rest can make such a difference.”

In Peg’s memory, the Kavanagh family made a generous donation that helped fund a sleeper chair for 7 West at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.

It may seem like a simple piece of furniture, but for families staying close to someone they love, it provides something incredibly important: a comfortable place to rest while remaining by their loved one’s side.

Their gift is a meaningful example of how memorial donations can honour someone special while providing comfort and care to patients and families for years to come.
